Dear visitor of this website,

Redstarts II. – Redstarts in puberty and on other bird teenagers
20th May 2022 | Ringing
I got an inspiration to write down this article after too frequently repeated contributions in various facebook groups, whose authors had always one in common – their astonishment that a phenomenon called “delayed plumage maturation” exists in some bird species, in particular in Black Redstart. It seems that many people have overlooked it in the books, despite the fact that this aspect is nothing hidden, obscure or otherwise concealed. I wrote this article for those of you, who would like to learn more about this phenomenon... Read more »
Redstarts I. – Hybrid redstart from Slavíč, Czech Republic
6
On 19th April 2020 an interesting male redstart was observed for the first time in Slavíč, a part of Hranice na Moravě in the Czech Republic (its observation in AVIF – Czech ornithological faunistic database). So our redstart specialist, Filip Petřík, went there to take a look at this individual to try to learn more about him. It seemed that this individual might be of hybrid origin, but the story is far from simple... Read more »

Dear visitor,
recently, there has been some problems with accessing my site. I am very sorry for all the incovenience. My webhosting provider is now under frequent DDoS attacks , very probably as a consequence of openly supporting Ukraine during this shameful act of aggression from the Russian side . As a consequence, this site may be down temporarily once in a while also in the future.
Once again, I am very sorry for any inconvenience.

Dear visitor,
after one recently achieved milestone (all of the Paridae uploaded to the gallery) comes another one – one that is much more important. Right now, the gallery of birds in hand is complete. But what does that mean? Well, it means that I finally manage to process and upload all of the photos I took over the last five or six years.
It also means that today, there are... Read more »

12th May 2021 | Ringing
This article was originally published in the bulletin of Czech ringing central in short version (2021/31) and in long version on my website in Czech. This is an English translation of that article. It was meant as an aid for ringers who would like to participate in a call to ring more White Wagtails during autumn migration. This species is trapped rather randomly in Czechia because it is not an easy species to trap during the breeding season. But this changes markedly during its migration and there is still a lot to learn... Read more »

8th March 2021 | Ringing European Bee-eater is probably not the commonly trapped species and most of the bird ringers probably trap them only by mere chance. It may then seem odd to start a new series of articles about ageing and sexing European birds with this particular species... Well, autumn… I started writing this article in mid-august. But for ornithologist from temperate regions of the northern hemisphere autumn does begin in August, or even late July. That is the time when first of the long-distance migrants begin their journey south. In Europe, these soon-departing species include mainly the Marsh Warblers, Red-backed Shrikes, Collared Flycatchers and among others the two species of nightingales. You can find such species also among the non-passerines. Perhaps the most well-known is the Common Swift... Read more »

Field season of our comparative project recently reached its end this year. Well, at least its “temperate breeding” part, as I call it. Then there is still the “temperate wintering” part, which is quickly approaching, and the tropical part. Just to make sure you do not think that we would be doing nothing for the rest of the year :) But after the end of “temperate breeding part”, there is a short time frame which can be used for other bird ringing activities (e.g. tapping into the fall migration) or other things. Such as holiday, maybe... Read more »

Dear visitors of my website. Today I am finally officially launching the long-prepared gallery of birds in hand. It has been more than a year (exactly 383 days) since the first blog post here promising, among others, some ringing reports here at this webpage. So, today it is already 12 days since the end of 2017 and I am finally posting my first ever blog post about ringing in 2017. Originally, I have planned to post much more often than just once a year. From the initial big plans of having at least monthly reports, I very soon realized that quarterly updates will be much more manageable but… Read more » 2017 and before 12th May, 2017 | Reviews
